Effective hygiene practices dramatically reduce the incidence of diarrheal disease—the number one killer of children in the developing world. Lifewater’s Community Health through Hygiene course focuses on promoting and understanding how diseases are transmitted and promoting essential hygiene practices, such as the importance of washing hands, using latrines, and preventing the contamination of safe water during access, transport, storage and use. Course facilitators model the participatory training method, and participants take turns teaching hygiene lessons in this style. By the end of the course, participants have practiced implementing the participatory training method and learned culturally adaptable hygiene lessons. Coursework includes pre-course assignments and 3 days onsite training. To successfully complete the course, participants must complete assignments and take part in all sessions. The course includes three modules that incorporate these practices: Handwashing at Critical Times, Safe Fecal Disposal, and Keeping Water Safe.
