For the past few years, Lifewater has been helping churches, small groups, and individuals bring significance to the season through participation in Significant Sacrifice: An Easter Journey. Through weekly devotions and a plan to turn our own sacrifices into gifts of gratitude to God, Significant Sacrifice helps us focus on our own role in the Easter story. After Easter, a Significant Celebration event helps us focus on the redemptive work God continues to do in the world.
Almost one thousand years before Christ’s resurrection, a story unfolded that demonstrated God’s mercy and a servant’s response. Because David disobeyed God, a plague descended on Israel. God then had mercy and withdrew His hand while the angel of the Lord was on the threshing floor of a man named Araunah. When David went to build an altar of remembrance, Araunah offered to give David everything he needed. David refused, saying, “I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” 2 Samuel 24:24
The instructions and resources available above will help you along the way. Beginning February 6, choose one activity to either begin or end for the season, until Easter. For example, past participants have given up coffee, refrained from shopping, or commuted to work by bike. Use the weekly devotionals to help you reflect on the meaning of the season and encourage one another. After Easter, celebrate with one another as you bring the offerings you have collected as a result of your personal sacrifice during the past weeks. It is not easy, but past participants have been amazed at how their relationship with God and their view of the world changed during that time.
