Water is Life, Sanitation is Dignity
Adapted from the Sanitation is Dignity campaign
by the German Toilet Organization
(www.germantoilet.org).
Objective
To raise awareness about the importance of addressing
the global sanitation crisis.
Strategy
Display the series of cut-out posters of North American
individuals squatting behind urban features in a public
location such as a church, central plaza, or community
hall. The edgy, humorous nature of the display will call
public attention to the crisis. Set up a nearby information
table offering educational materials about the sanitation
crisis and Lifewater’s response. Click

Key Messages
Sanitation is Dignity.
People of all cultures recognize the need for privacy,
yet 2.6 billion people—approximately 42 percent of
the world’s population—do not have adequate
sanitation.
Sanitation is Health.
Proper sanitation helps to stop disease transmission and
keeps safe water safe. Adequate sanitation, together with
safe water and effective hygiene practices, reduces the
risk of diarrheal disease by an average of 65 percent (World
Health Organization).
Sanitation is Security.
A simple, accessible latrine greatly reduces a woman’s
risk of being assaulted when searching for a private place.
Sanitation is Education.
When adequate sanitation facilities are offered at schools,
female enrollment increases dramatically, and girls no
longer drop out of school when they reach puberty.
