Supporting Business Development Through Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Laos
Laos (Lao People's Democratic Republic) is considered one of the world's least developed countries. Less than half of the rural people have a sustainable supply of safe water, and just 20 percent have the dignity and privacy of a place to use the bathroom. (WHO) Not surprisingly, these conditions contribute to the prevalence of water-related diseases; according to UNICEF, diarrhea is the second leading cause of childhood deaths in Laos.
Rural Lao villagers are being displaced due to government-sponsored hydroelectric dam projects. As these people attempt to reestablish themselves, the most urgent needs are for basic infrastructure life water water and latrines.
Through a two-year project, Lifewater and its partners are targeting marginalized and displaced communities with well drilling, sanitation promotion, and hygiene education. This project is expected to increase access to safe water and health for 9,000 people through 30 drilled wells and hygiene education in 16 communities.
The total budget is $247,000, of which $20,000 has already been raised. A generous donor has also given a drilling machine and equipment.
