Sanitation: Latrine Design and Construction

Latrine Design and Construction Course Description

Latrine Design & Construction addresses the social, technical, and environmental issues involved in building improved latrines. Participants are given the tools and hands-on experience that will enable them to train Lifewater’s partners in Latrine Design and Construction.

The course includes participatory approaches to the software and hardware aspects of sanitation. Those attending will have the opportunity to participate in and facilitate sanitation lessons, and construct various latrine components.

 

 

Class information:
Class Length: 3 days
Cost: $475 includes the manual and lunches for all three days.
Topics Covered Include: Field Trainers learn about the connections between sanitation and disease, the biblical mandate for sanitation; how soil and groundwater influence proper latrine location, the construction, operation, and maintenance of various latrine designs, and how to adapt designs to accommodate people with special needs. FT’s will also participate in the construction of a concrete slab and learn how to facilitate lessons to Lifewater Partners.
Prerequisites: No background or experience in sanitation-related fields is required; however some experience with concrete is helpful.

Class Size: 5 minimum,12 maximum
Daily Schedule: 8:00am- 5:00pm, lunch provided. Optional “dine-out” on the first night of class.
Dress: Casual during lessons, bring jeans, work boots, gloves, and a hat for construction
Pre-Class Assignments:
  • After registration, participants will be sent a pre-questionnaire where they will provide information about their background and expectations for the course.
  • Each participant will be sent the workbook Sanitation and Cleanliness. It is strongly suggested that participants read this as it provides excellent sanitation background and will give participants a head start in understanding Lifewater’s course manual.
  • Participants are expected to facilitate one lesson to the class. This is sent prior to the course.
  • A pre-course conference call with all participants may also be required.

This course has been developed to prepare Lifewater’s volunteer field trainers (FTs) to implement our Programs with our national Partners. FTs should register through the VTIC. Other individuals and organizations may also take this class, as space is available.
