What is the Well Project?

The Well Project is Lifewater International’s contribution to a grassroots movement nationwide that is inspiring environmental and social responsibility across university campuses. School administrators agree to donate money saved during a set period of time through campus-wide campaigns to conserve water, electricity, and other utilities. The initiative provides a tangible connection between our abundance and our responsibility to ensure that all people have access to life’s most basic resources. The goal is to inspire university communities to model good stewardship, compassion for the poor, and solidarity with God's people worldwide.

Who has participated in the past?

In 2008, Wheaton College in Illinois raised $5,000 for Lifewater through a dorm contest to determine who could conserve more resources in a set period of time. In 2009, Azusa Pacific University in California raised $10,000 for Lifewater in the forty days of Lent through a campus-wide conservation campaign. These efforts produced long-term benefits both on campus and among those who gained safe water because of the money raised. The Well Project encourages other to follow their example.

How do we do this on our campus?

1. Form a core team of students to lead the initiative. Ideally, the team should be comprised of diverse individuals representing a variety of majors and spheres of influence.

2. Draft a letter of support for the initiative and seek signatures from faculty, staff, and administration.

3. Seek a commitment from the administration to donate to Lifewater International any money saved (compared to the same month the previous year) through resource conservation during a set period of time. If the dining hall has different facilities management, ask them to participate as well.

4. Launch the campaign.
  • Encourage students to conserve in both practical and unusual ways through posters, articles, videos, tshirts, wristbands, public announcements, and other means of communication. Be creative, and feel free to ask Lifewater for ideas and assistance.
  • Ask the management to turn down/up thermostats.
  • Ask staff and professors to participate in the initiative by conserving at home.
  • Remind people to conserve through emails and campus website announcements.
  • Keep up active online communication through facebook, twitter, etc.

5. Conclude with a celebration. Plan a public event, such as a concert or WaterWalk (parade of people carrying water over a certain distance) to honor the one billion people who spend hours every day seeking water.

6. Donate the money you save through your conservation efforts to Lifewater International so that others can gain safe water. Lifewater will discuss with you the possibility of donating to a specific project.

7. Share your success. Ask campus publications, alumni magazine, local news, etc. to cover the initiative.

8. Stay connected with Lifewater about the difference your money is making.

9. Consider making this an annual event.
