Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene Promotion

note

Installing wells and constructing latrines accomplish little in addressing the water and sanitation crisis if people are not convinced of the need for them. This participatory course trains Lifewater Partners to assess, plan, and implement promotion strategies to increase demand for safe water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene education. The course teaches partners how to include WASH promotion in their development projects through participatory community assessments, social marketing, and creative promotion strategies. Partners learn the value of culturally sensitive promotion and gain insight into the complex process of behavioral change.

Research has shown that health education is simply not enough to inspire behavior change. Developing sustainable behavior change requires a community-centered approach that focuses on how people think and feel about WASH products and behaviors. Promotion programs developed using this method cater to the knowledge, beliefs and practices of the community rather than preconceived notions of those implementing.

Due to the dynamic spirit of Promotion, this course is recommended for Field Trainers with experience training in Lifewater’s hygiene and sanitation curriculum. Field Trainers accompany Lifewater staff to train partners and help them develop a promotion program that compliments their organizational strategy.
