helping other African nations seek peace; abundant wildlife;
established tourist industry; communication facilitated by common
languages of Swahili and English spoken by large percentages
of the population.
National Challenges: High unemployment,
crime, poverty, frequent droughts; overgrazed land; lack of safe
water, sanitation, and hygiene education
Lifewater: In 2006 Lifewater
and its Kenyan partners completed 26 wells, repaired 16 hand
pumps, and trained 18 nationals in hand pump repair. Lifewater
and its partners also constructed 74 biosand filters, equipped
255 hygiene trainers, and trained 4794 villagers in hygiene education.
As a result of the work of Lifewater and its partner in Kenya,
22,000 people received first-time access to safe water.
