Help 8 Villages in Uganda

Early every morning, while it was still dark, Justine would collect her two plastic containers and begin the three-hour journey to gather water for her family.

When she finally arrived at the well she usually found a long line, and would have to wait for hours for water. Her return trip was a burdensome walk, hauling two 40-pound containers back to her waiting children.

Without a nearby source of clean water, Justine had no choice but to spend hours fetching water for her family. She had no time to work or care for her children.

“Previously, people did not work…we women, we would just stay home, go for water, and come back,” she said.

Justine is a teacher in her village of Busango in Uganda. But when her days were spent gathering water, she didn’t have time to teach, let alone care for her two young children, Mercy and Emmanuel. Without clean water close by, the entire village was trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Here’s the great news: life is different today for Justine and her village. She has a new well near her home that provides plentiful clean water. Now, instead of spending all day gathering water, Justine has time to provide for her family. She is teaching at the local primary school, and the family has even begun raising livestock for supplemental income.

“Our lives changed because Lifewater taught us so many things,” said Justine. “There is no more falling sick.”
