Life in Adlo: Safe Water for All

As of March 16, 2018 all 268 people in Adlo village drink safe water and practice healthy sanitation and hygiene.

Safe water is giving everyone more opportunities and greater health. Children, no longer sick from preventable water-related illnesses, are able to go to school; parents are saving time gathering water and using that time to invest in their futures

In an initial survey, Adlo and surrounding villages reported that just half of households were drinking safe water. Less than 1% of households had a bathroom with a door and a roof to keep human waste from getting into the village.

Today, over 90% of homes in Adlo have an improved bathroom to help prevent disease, and everyone has access to safe water close by. Children are able to wash their hands with soap at critical times in the day, and everyone is living healthier lives.

Daye Sida, a resident of Bensa, said, “This will be a great relief for our family in many ways, including improved health and economy of my family, reduced workload, reduced distance traveled in search of water.”

Families are empowered to utilize their own skills and resources, and they are actively practicing health and sanitation habits that save lives around the world each day.

Change was possible because the community came together to learn and practice vital health and sanitation practices. Lifewater supporters gave generously to support these trainings and a safe water source, effectively becoming the hands and feet of Jesus in rural Ethiopia.

Adlo has completed all of the prerequisites for building a safe water source: There are already a number of Healthy Homes and an active water committee, plus the 15% community contribution is in place.

The next step is to build a safe water source. As soon as weather and scheduling allows, construction will begin on a new water source for the community.
